The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) conducts scientific research in our seas using the Marmara Research Vessel and supports scientific projects related to the seas and oceans, fostering awareness of the seas and oceans among our youth through TEKNOFEST competitions, and conducts regular scientific studies each year in the Southern Ocean—the world’s coldest ocean—and the Arctic Ocean—the world’s shallowest ocean—as part of its polar research efforts. In addition to its many marine and ocean-themed activities, TÜBİTAK plays an active role in the “Navigation, Hydrography, and Oceanography Services Planning and Coordination Council (SHO),” which coordinates our country’s marine research efforts. The United Nations (UN) Decade of the Ocean, spanning 2021–2030, aims to promote scientific research for the protection and sustainable use of the oceans, improve marine ecosystems, and raise awareness about the seas. In line with this, TÜBİTAK is organizing the first-ever Decade of the Ocean Art Competition to foster marine and ocean awareness among the younger generation in our country, which is surrounded by seas on three sides.
The competition aims to help our young people express their thoughts about the oceans through visual arts, approach ocean and marine ecosystems from different perspectives, develop a sense of individual responsibility toward the environment, develop the ability to freely express themselves through art, and broaden their perspective on scientific research. In this way, the goal is to create widespread awareness in the field of ocean sciences in our country. Additionally, the goal is to foster a generation that, by imagining the ecosystems of the oceans, creates works that bring science and art together at a young age—works inspired by the scientific research conducted by our scientists in the oceans—and that will pursue scientific curiosity in the future.
