As part of the TÜBİTAK 4007 DISASTER-AFFECTED REGION “SCIENCE IS EVERYWHERE” SPECIAL SUPPORT CALL, organized under the leadership of the Gemlik District Directorate of National Education, experts from our Institute of Polar Research brought the poles to Hatay.

Deeply saddened by the disaster that occurred during the 7th National Antarctic Science Expedition, the scientific team rushed to the disaster zone to help the children affected by the earthquake as soon as the expedition ended. The polar experts participating in the project, supported by TÜBİTAK, conducted a variety of workshops and presentations to broaden the children’s perspective on science, share in their grief, and help them grow through the light of science. The rock and lava samples brought back by researchers from the continent truly captivated the children. While the children learned about a wide variety of topics—from polar bears to penguins—the younger ones had fun coloring pictures of Arctic animals.

The project, which took place in Iskenderun, Hatay, from April 12–14, was successfully completed thanks to the dedication of all participants and the collaboration of the Gemlik District Governor’s Office, the Gemlik Municipality, the Gemlik Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Gemlik District Health Directorate.
