The Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) was officially established in 2011 as a result of international initiatives by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), was officially established in 2011 with the opening of the International Project Office organized by the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) at the University of Tasmania in Australia.
In line with the mission and objectives defined by the SOOS community, the 5-Year Implementation Plan outlines its near-term plans, including the creation of a network of collaborating stakeholders and contributors and the facilitation of the design and implementation of a multidisciplinary observation system for the Southern Ocean.
In an article published in SOOS News and written by our Vice President for Climate Change and Sustainability, who is also the Director of the Polar Sciences and Polar Logistics Unit, Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, the polar research currently being conducted in Turkey as part of the Turkish Antarctic Expeditions is highlighted.
Beginning with the history of Turkish polar research, which dates back to the 1960s, through our accession to the Antarctic Treaty System as the Republic of Turkey in 1995, followed by the National Antarctic Science Expeditions that began to be organized regularly in subsequent years and the articles published as part of these research efforts, Turkish polar research and the related national and international developments achieved in this field are presented in chronological order in the relevant article.
In parallel with the growing scientific research and public interest in polar studies in Turkey, which is expanding day by day;
- The coordination and logistics of polar expeditions,
- Support for scientific research and development activities,
- To operate Turkey’s polar research camp(s) and station(s),
- To facilitate communication among relevant organizations and to carry out bilateral international collaborations,
- To raise awareness about the polar regions on a national scale,
- To conduct national and international scientific diplomacy in the polar regions and to enhance Turkey’s representation and scientific participation on the international stage
